New Mexico earned the name "Land of Enchantment" in 1941 — officially given by the tourist bureau, but really just confirming what anyone who had ever stood in that light already knew.
This mid-century souvenir plate carries the state's name in bold red western lettering on a rose and pink border with gold floral filigree — distinctly different from the greens used for other states, and all the warmer for it. The center showcases New Mexico's landmarks as mid-century travelers would have known them. Unmarked, but attributed to Homer Laughlin after comparison with known examples.
