  • Pattern:  Old Cabin Still
  • Made in Louisville, Kentucky, USA
  • Vintage: 1955
  • Details:  This is a very rare find, we searched high and low and found only one other for sale, but without the labels. This one has both the front and back labels, the partial tax strip, and its original cork stopper!  Truly a very special bottle for a collector and makes a beautiful decanter.  Originally sold with Old Cabin Still Handmade Bourbon, this bottle was most likely a holiday promotional item.  It has a very unique shape, a very long neck and a pretty stopper. The bottom of the bottle is embossed: "Federal Law Forbids the Sale or Re-Use of This Bottle", there's also an "I", then D-379, 55  Z0 plus the Owens Corning logo.  We dated this bottle based on the number '55 embossed on the bottom also taking into consideration that the Owens Corning logo shown was first used in 1954, plus the "Federal Law" message was used between 1935 and 1964.  We are dating the bottle, not the contents it once had, as it could have been filled and sold after 1955.  This is a great gift for a bottle collector and wonderful as a liquor decanter and bar decor.  When entertaining, it's good to have a few different liquors and wines already decanted for guests, this bottle is not only old, but it's rare and therefore, special.

Old Cabin Still was created by W. L. Weller & Sons (William LaRue Weller), in the 1890s.  In 1899 W.L. Weller passed away, Julian P. Van Winkle Sr, (better known as Pappy Van Winkle) along with Alex Fansley, bought the company.  Pappy Van Winkle had been originally hired by Weller & Sons in 1893, at the age of 18, as a salesman. Pappy bought the wholesale house and also purchased the A. Ph. Stitzel Distillery, which made bourbon for Weller.  Pappy and Alex merged the two companies which became the "Stitzel-Weller Distillery".  The brand was sold as medicinal whiskey during Prohibition and became a wheat recipe Bourbon when the newly completed Stitzel-Weller distillery was opened in 1935.  Their prominent brands were: W.L. Weller, Old Fitzgerald, Rebel Yell, and Old Cabin Still.  When Pappy passed away at the age of 91, his son, Julian Jr, took over but with declining sales he was eventually forced to sell the distillery in 1972. The rights to all of their brands were either sold with the distillery or to other distilleries.
