A hungry lion learns that rabbits make better friends than dinner — illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren, one of the great mid-century picture book artists.

  • Author: Kathryn Jackson | Illustrator: Gustaf Tenggren
  • Publisher: Simon and Schuster, New York
  • Copyright: 1952, Original Edition
  • Format: Hardcover
  • Dimensions: 8" x 6.75"
  • Condition: Good — significant cover wear, gold binding very worn, back faded; child's pencil inscription on inside front cover; interior good, pages yellowing with slight corner folds, no tears or missing pages. Please review photos closely before purchasing, as all sales are final.

This is the original 1952 Simon & Schuster release, now over 70 years old and carrying its age gracefully — a child named "Liza" signed the inside front cover in pencil, with a charming backwards Z.

A collectible for the Little Golden Book enthusiast or the Tenggren admirer — one of the most beloved illustrators of the golden age of American picture books.

Gustaf Tenggren (1896-1970) emigrated from Sweden to the United States in 1920, and went on to work as a lead art director for Walt Disney Studios on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Pinocchio before joining Golden Books in the 1940s, where his richly detailed, fairy-tale-inflected style shaped some of the era's most iconic illustrated children's books, including The Poky Little Puppy and this title.
