There's something disarming about a pair of bookends that smile back at you — Grandma mid-stitch, Grandpa lost in his book, each rendered with the warmth of a hand that knew them well.
This one-of-a-kind pair came from a small ceramics studio, the Nifty Nook, in West Plains, Missouri, where local artist Carol created hobbyist molds for clients to paint and fire themselves. Grandpa reads in his glasses and denim vest; Grandma knits beside him in a matching shawl. Both are signed and dated 1974, with soft, well-kept color and felt pads still on the base. Note that these are solid ceramic and genuinely heavy for their size — substantial pieces built to hold their ground on a shelf for decades more.
A natural gift for a retiree or grandparent, or simply a charming addition to a study or home office shelf, framing a row of favorite books with a bit of personality.
