It features a portrait of François de Barbé-Marbois encircled by laurel leaves — the ancient symbol of victory, triumph, high achievement, and honor. The choice of laurel was entirely deliberate. Marbois had earned it. He negotiated the Louisiana Purchase. In 1803, as Napoleon's Minister of the Treasury, he sat across the table from American diplomats Robert Livingston and James Monroe and agreed to sell 828,000 square miles of North American territory to the United States for approximately $15 million — roughly three cents an acre. It was the largest land acquisition in American history, doubling the size of the young nation overnight and opening the continent to westward expansion. Without Marbois, the American West as we know it might never have existed. That an advertiser chose to honor him on their label in the early 1900s — just a century after the Purchase — speaks to how deeply that transaction still resonated in the American imagination. This is an outer label — the first thing a buyer saw when picking up the box.
