Germania the Bear was introduced January 1, 1999, part of TY's International Bears II Collection released through McDonald's to celebrate the Happy Meal's 17th anniversary. By the late 1990s, Beanie Babies had become a genuine cultural phenomenon — TY, founded by Ty Warner in 1986, was even credited as one of the first companies to build an internet following, with certain bears collected as much for resale value as for play.
