Description

  • Made in China
  • Vintage: circa 1970's
  • Details: This is a beautiful and unique multi-color container which features the traditional famille rose style around the bottom border and lid border, however it also has the look of Qianjiang enamel as the main decoration (see below for differences in style).  Variety of designs abound, there are lots of trees, mountains and stones but also animals like cranes and deer.  The art work is all around the piece as well as the lid. The colors are opaque in places and fluid/light in others, like watercolor.  We noticed the animals are all in pairs, this would make an ideal bridal shower or wedding gift for a chinoiserie lover.   The lid does not provide an air-tight seal, not appropriate for food storage.  Very special piece, great as a gift or home decor.

The famille rose is characterized by an opaque glassy white enamel (lead arsenate) which is employed as the base for colored enamels which are either mixed with white or brushed on top of it to created variations in tone. Earlier enamels in this palette were applied with glue as its base which helped with building thick layers of enamels, while later versions, such as this one, are applied with the use of rue oil as a medium, which gives thinner layers.  Fencai (powder colors) is a 19th century term which has been further defined to being 'famille rose' decor against a white ground.  Famille rose enamels are mixed with white and are opaque (not see through).

Qianjiang ceramics painting is a term used to describe a type of over-glaze enameled ware which was very popular during the Late Qing/Early Republican Period. The term Qianjiang cai (enamels) was only coined in the 1950's.  Due to its subdued color tones, visually the painting has a quiet and delicate feeling.  Qianjiang enamel was applied directly on the white glazed porcelain surface, giving the decoration the appearance of a watercolor painting.
