Garnet and Frieda Carter opened their rock gardens on Lookout Mountain to the public on May 21, 1932. The Carters hired a young sign painter in 1935, Clark Byers, who began painting "See Rock City" on barns across the Southeast and Midwest. By 1969 he had painted more than 900 signs in 19 states. If you traveled along rural and major tourist routes like: U.S. 11, U.S. 41, and U.S. 43, you probably saw lots of them. Those barns turned a mountaintop garden into a fixture of the family road trip, however, the Highway Beautification Act of 1965 restricted roadside and barn advertising. This glass works as a small souvenir of that era of Southern travel.

Browse our shop for more vintage state souvenir glasses to round out your collection.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0624/1733/8577/files/IMG_9510_4a8970f6-1749-4d6f-904e-f130878d3b11.jpg?v=1791053006
https://www.antigotrunk.com/en-ca/products/tumbler-state-map-souvenir-glass-georgia-frosted-vintage-1960s
